22:5 prophet Gad. Later to serve as King David’s seer (2 Sam. 24:11; 2 Chr. 29:25; cf. 1 Chr. 29:29), Gad’s presence at this point is a reminder that David’s destiny is divinely appointed and that he is under the Lord’s protection. David will later be joined by a priest (vv. 20–23).
