3:18 It is the Lord. Let him do what seems good to him. Eli humbly accepts his rejection and confesses God’s right to rule in the affairs of men. His words establish a benchmark by which later characters in the narrative should be judged: Saul (20:30, 31) and David (2 Sam. 15:25, 26).
